After a record-setting performance in his first collegiate start, true freshman Deshaun Watson of Clemson has been named the Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week for the fifth week of the college football season.
Watson, who directed the Tigers to a 50-35 victory over North Carolina, set a school record and matched an Atlantic Coast Conference standard by throwing six touchdown passes Saturday.
The native of Gainesville, Ga., completed 27 of 36 passes for 435 yards, the six scores and one interception. The 435 passing yards rank second in Clemson history and are the second most ever by an ACC quarterback in his inaugural start.
In parts of four games this season, Watson has completed 56 of 77 passes for 914 yards and 10 touchdowns. In addition, he has 75 yards rushing and a score. He currently leads the nation in yards per pass attempt (11.87), ranks second in passing efficiency rating (212.7) and is third in completion percentage (.727).
All 128 FBS quarterbacks are eligible for the weekly honor, which is determined by votes from a subset of the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee. All honorable mention selections received at least one vote from that panel. The final weekly award will be issued on Oct. 27 prior to the paring down to 16 semifinalists for the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award on Nov. 3.
