FORT WORTH, Texas (Oct. 5, 2021) — Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder has earned Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week honors for his play in the Bearcats’ 24-13 victory at No. 9 Notre Dame on Saturday, the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced.
On the afternoon, the senior from Louisville, Ky., completed 19 of 32 passes for 297 yards and two scores. In addition, he rushed for 26 yards and a game-sealing fourth quarter touchdown as the Bearcats snapped the Fighting Irish’s 26-game home winning streak.
Ridder also was named the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week, and on Monday became one of just 10 players to be named to the Davey O’Brien Great 8 multiple times in 2021. This is the second time in his career that Ridder has taken home the national honor from the Davey O’Brien Award (Oct. 28, 2020).
The other quarterbacks on the Great 8 list in week five were Sam Hartman of Wake Forest, Stanford’s Tanner McKee, N’Kosi Perry of Florida Atlantic, Iowa’s Spencer Petras, Kenny Pickett of Pitt, Mississippi State’s Will Rogers and C.J. Stroud of Ohio State.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation was created in 1977, and the National Quarterback Award, the oldest and most prestigious college quarterback award, was first issued in 1981. Over its time, the Davey O’Brien Foundation has given away more than $1.2 million in scholarships and university grants to help high school and college athletes transform leadership on the field into leadership in life.
In 1938, O’Brien, who wore No. 8 as a star quarterback for TCU, became the first player ever to win the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award and Walter Camp Award in the same year. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. For more information, visit www.DaveyOBrien.org.
